Approaches and starting points

There are several natural approaches and starting points to the protected areas. These are places where visitors can read more about the villages that surround the mountainous areas, and where the best places are to start your trip. We have gathered some great alternatives both for those who prefer to enjoy the views without having to strap on their hiking boots, and for those who wish to spend several days in the mountains.

Hjerkinn

Hjerkinn is located at the highest point along the E6 highway over Dovrefjell, between Dombås and Oppdal, where FV 29 from Alvdal meets the E6. It is possible to reach Hjerkinn by both car and train, and it is also the starting point for the shuttle bus into Snøheim.

Kongsvoll

Kongsvoll is located approximately midway between Dombås and Oppdal town center along the E6 highway.

Oppdal

If you are traveling from the north to visit Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella, the mountain village of Oppdal is a natural stop.

Gjøra

Gjøra is a small village in the far east of Sunndalen valley, midway between Oppdal and Sunndalsøra. With Gjøra as a starting point, the possibilities are many no matter how old you are.

Eikesdal

The beautiful village of Eikesdal is located at the southern end of Eikesdalsvatnet lake, the largest lake in Møre og Romsdal.

Brandstad in Øksendalen valley

Brandstad is located at the innermost part of Øksendalen valley and has a parking lot. This is a great starting point for a summit trip to the fantastic Fløtatind mountain.

Åndalsnes

Åndalsnes is located in Rauma Municipality, between Molde and Lesja. Sandwiched between fjords and mountains and nicknamed the mountain capital, it goes without saying that this place offers many hiking opportunities.

Lesja

The mountain village of Lesja is located between Åndalsnes and Dombås and is surrounded by two national parks – Reinheimen in the west and Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella in the east.
